Summer 2011 Top Ten

Most of this summer's top ten were taken on earthquake day (August 23, 2011). It was lovely out, so Edward and I decided to take a trip to Brooklyn to check out Brooklyn Bridge Park.

It's a work in progress, but already developed enough to be quite charming. And of course the view of Manhattan across the river is to die for.

We also found a terrific little restaurant close by, so we will definitely return next year to see if they have made any additional progress.

While we were in Brooklyn I took this photo of Edward's old hangout -- Cadman Plaza.

We were on the Brooklyn Promenade taking additional photos when the earthquake hit. I actually thought it was the traffic on the BQE, which runs below the walkway, that was causing the shaking! It was only when we tried to go home and saw everyone in the streets that we heard what had actually happened.

This summer I also took my first trip on the Roosevelt Island tram. The view was awesome!

And I got some great photos on the island too. Here's one of the United Nations and a visiting sea gull.

It's interesting that from this angle the Empire State Building appears to be smaller than its neighbors.

And then there's my perennial favorite -- Central Park, which looks great all year round.

PJ's winter 2011 top ten

Thanks to our snowest January ever, both the Upper East Side and Central Park were turned into winter wonderlands. Here are my top ten photos...

NYC’s Snowiest January Ever!

It’s official, with the addition of the 19 inches that fell on Wednesday we have now broken the one month total for January. The previous record was from 1925, and it was 27.4 inches. As of today, we have had 36 inches in January 2011. And there’s a chance of light snow tonight and tomorrow night! If we get one more inch, it will be our snowiest month ever.

That’s especially significant because our snowiest month is usually February!

Looking outside at the huge piles of snow everywhere I find myself having flashbacks to the winter of 95/96, which was our snowiest winter ever. I remember it well. As a result, every winter since then hasn’t seemed that bad – until this one. That one started earlier, in November, but this one had the sixth largest total ever in late December. And since then we seem to be having weekly storms. This one was our seventh.



On the plus side, instead of worrying about driving to New Jersey in bad weather as I did in 95/96, I have enough flexibility in my schedule to actually take off snow days and head out with my camera. Thursday was truly stunning. The neighborhood was exquisite.

Central Park was a mob scene. (We have a 50 inch base – cross country skiing anyone?) My favorite comment was from a woman who said to her companion “Well at least we have our camera phone!”

PJs Top Ten - Fall 2010

In fall 2010, I was blessed with a perfect day in Central Park. It was November 12, 2010. The trees were actually a bit past prime, but the sky was so blue I decided to head over to the park and see how things looked. What I quickly realized is that the fact that the trees were a bit past prime actually worked to my advantage because it allowed more light to flow between the trees, and provided some interesting trunk shapes to work with. I was so excited with the photos is was tough to pick out just ten.

But, as it turns out, I needed to narrow it to eight to accomodate two more highlights. This first one is my lovely great niece. Her mom says that when the little one looks at this shot she always laughs. Well, so do I.


I also felt compelled to add a shot of my roof garden, since it was lovely this fall as well. It was great sitting up there and reading.


Now on to the stars of the show...
