Fall 2011 Top Ten

After a rough start, this fall has turned out to be a beauty.  So I headed over to Central Park to get some photos.  For many years I have wished that I could get some photos of Literary Walk without people in them. This year I got my wish. But it was definitely a case of be careful what you wish for.

The reason that there are no people in this photo is that the walk was closed so that they could clean up the damage done by our record breaking October 30th snowstorm -- 2.9 inches fell in Central Park.  It was the most since 1869!  We had big fat fluffy flakes that weighed down the fully leafed branches and did considerable damage.  They estimate that 1000 trees were lost.

While they were very photogenic, the green and yellow colored branches are actually broken and will need to be pruned.

One last photo of the elms. Hopefully the damage will be minimal since they are now fighting off Dutch Elm disease too.

They're 150 years old -- may they live forever.
